A family-owned store, a Suttons Bay landmark, and an American story spanning five generations.
One Family. Five Generations. 150 Years in Suttons Bay.
A century and a half ago, Norwegian immigrant Lars “L.E.” Bahle opened a small general store in Suttons Bay, Michigan. What began as a one-room shop serving settlers, farmers, and working families has grown into one of Michigan’s oldest continuously family-owned stores.
“I sold my land and built a little store. It went wonderful well.” — Lars Bahle

An American Story in Suttons Bay
The Bahle family and Suttons Bay have been linked by history, hard work, and community for generations. From Lars and Oline Bahle’s early general store to the modern boutique experience customers know today, Bahle’s has continually changed with the times while staying rooted in family service.
The O.M. Nelson
In 1882, Lars Bahle built a pier and a 107-foot schooner named the O.M. Nelson. The vessel carried agricultural products out and brought merchandise back, helping the young store serve a growing community.
Community First
Across generations, the Bahle family has helped shape Suttons Bay through church, fire department, civic leadership, parks, trails, the marina, and local service organizations.
